I used one frequently w/ a Surface Go in the past without issue, haven't seen any issues yet, and it's pretty great traveling w/ only one charger for everything. Ultimately I see no reason not to use a USB-C charger.

But depending on the efficiency of the Surface's power conversion and battery charger circuits at the different voltages it really could go either way. Theoretically the higher voltage means lower amps for same watts and therefore less heating. But hard to say whether this would result in more or less heating of the Surface. Have not noticed any heating or differences in charging with that vs the stock surface port charger, even with the 1 hr fast charge, and I have tried to pay attention to make sure.Ī power meter shows the Pro X negotiates 20V from my USB-C charger, which is more than Surface charger's 15V. Entirely possible this was due to the fact I'm using a 130W Dell adapter rather than the recommend 180W.Īlso, I use a 65W USB-C charger daily with my Surface Pro X, and solely use it to charge it while traveling. Unplugging and reattaching the USB-C cord fixed it, and now I usually just check the battery meter in the system tray a few min after connecting to verify the surface/laptop is receiving power. The battery started draining on my laptop or Surface at what appeared to be faster rate than normal.

One thing to look out for, that's happened once or twice on both my laptop and surface, is the WD15 to connect fine for the monitor, USB ports, etc, but somehow not negotiate the USB-C power delivery correctly. Pulling the power cord on the dock and waiting 10 secs or so usually fixes that, while unplugging and reattaching the usb-c computer cable does not. Most significant issue has been the monitor not appearing on the surface or Dell, which mostly happens when I unplug the one and try to swap to the other quickly.

I've found the WD15 to be buggy in general, even with my Dell XPS, but it does work with the Pro X. Its obviously different from the Pro 7, but they're sold w/ the same charger so some of my experiences might apply.
